
Applying to JET is a Two Stage Process
- Submitting the online application and other required documents
- Required documents
- Proof of Canadian Citizenship (Canadian passport, provincial birth certificate or citizen card)
- Official transcripts of all College and University courses
- Proof of TESL/TEFL and/or Teacher certification
- Copy of Degree(s) or proof of graduation date
- 2 recent letters of reference (1 from a teacher if you are still a student)
- Other forms included in the application
- Going for an interview. Applicants who pass this first stage are then granted an interview, usually held in February. The interviews are held in Ottawa or in one of the following cities under the jurisdiction of the Japanese consulates: Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto or Montreal. Please note that from this second stage on, the city in which you do your interview will become your departure city for flying to Japan.
Timeline
- October-November: Application is available (online only)
- End of November: Deadline for submitting applications
- January: Notification of interview dates for those passing the paper selection stage
- February: Interviews held in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Dates are not flexible. Interviews may take place during university Reading Week.
- March: Notification of acceptance and placement for successful early departure applicants
- April: Notification of acceptance for successful applicants (Short List or Alternate). Early departure JETs arrive in Japan and start appointment.
- May – July: Notification of placement and Pre-Departure Orientation
- Late July – Early August: Departure for Japan and Tokyo Orientation
